Warhol's Wild Kingdom: A Roaring Success at Sotheby's

A rare Andy Warhol print takes center stage, driving a successful Sotheby's online auction.

A roaring success, Sotheby's recent online 'Prints & Multiples' auction was led by a striking work from the iconic Andy Warhol. His African Elephant from the Endangered Species series commanded a top bid of $164,200, far surpassing its low estimate of $73,600.

The December 4th sale generated a total of $690,600, meeting its pre-sale estimate. While Warhol's masterpiece stole the show, other notable performers included Max Pechstein's Sommer II, which sold for $17,700, a significant increase over its low estimate.

While the auction saw a strong overall performance, with 82% of lots finding new homes, a few pieces, such as Thomas Schutte's Architektur Modelle 1980 - 2006, failed to attract bids and were subsequently bought in.

As the art market continues to evolve, online auctions have emerged as a powerful platform for collectors to acquire significant works. Sotheby's successful sale highlights the enduring appeal of iconic artists like Warhol and the growing demand for prints and multiples.
